Homeless camp stabbing investigation suspended

None of the four men involved wish to pursue charges

No charges will be filed related to Saturday’s stabbing at a homeless camp in Durango, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Bender said Monday.

None of the four people involved in the incident wanted to pursue charges, and the investigation is suspended, he said.

Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, officers found an injured man at the homeless camp behind the Durango Tech Center, west of downtown.

The man, Harry Johnhat, 31, was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center, where he was listed Wednesday evening in good condition.

Bender said officers followed the trail of blood to a tent where three men in their mid-20s were questioned.

Officers learned that Johnhat confronted the men and pulled a knife. Johnhat was subsequently injured when the three men attempted to disarm him.

“From the investigation so far, he appears to be the primary aggressor even though he’s the one who received the wounds,” Bender said Sunday.
