Locked circuit cleared, power back on for 938 in Animas Valley

Power was restored at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday to 938 La Plata County Electric Association customers in the Animas Valley north of Trimble Lane.

Power was restored at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday to 938 La Plata County Electric Association customers in the Animas Valley north of Trimble Lane.

The outage began at 3:19 p.m. and affected customers near East Animas Road (County Road 250), Dalton Ranch, and Trimble Spa and Natural Hot Springs.

“Over the ensuing hours, crews sectionalized the circuits in the valley, steadily restoring power, but no obvious cause for the outage was found,” LPEA officials said in a news release. “Minor pieces of equipment have been replaced, weeds and trees cut or removed, but no significant problem has been found within this portion of the system.”

The release said electrical equipment on a system grid is designed to last 25 to 30 years, and infrastructure in the Dalton Ranch area is among LPEA’s more recent installations.

La Plata Electric Association said the Trimble III circuit locked open, causing the outage. There was no indication what caused the circuit to lock, but crews were in the area looking for other issues.

Tuesday’s outage is the latest in a string of outages and power “blinks” in the area over the past several weeks. LPEA crews are actively working to find the cause.
