Nobody will be coming to take your guns

The Republican Party, the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups are constantly saying, “they’re coming to take our guns” and “they’re going to abolish the Second Amendment.” This is wrong, and they know its wrong, but they continue saying it anyway as a way to rally their troops.

I refer them to Article 5 of the U.S. Constitution, which says what is necessary to amend the document, either by addition or deletion. Article 5 states that either a) Two-thirds of the Senate (67) and two-thirds of the House of Representatives (291) or b) two-thirds (34) of the states need to suggest an amendment and then three-fourths of the states (38) need to approve it before it becomes part of the Constitution.

No one person, not Obama, not Clinton, not anybody, can alter the Constitution unilaterally. Plus, getting 67 senators and 291 congressmen to agree to any amendment and then getting 38 states to agree to it would be a prohibitive task.

The gun-rights people know this. It is taught to all of us in the eighth grade. They can ask any lawyer in the country about it, but they don’t want to officially hear about it because it gets in the way of their constant espousing of, “they’re coming to take our guns” and “they’re going to get rid of the Second Amendment.” I don’t think we’re that stupid.
