Rules of the road apply to fools, too

I am writing about the guys on bicycles who made an illegal right-hand turn on July 21 from Main Ave. to College Drive and then sped up to pass the car in front – on its passenger side – the car that was making a right-hand turn into an alley.

They are lucky I’m psychic. I like cyclists. I was one, peddling an average of thirty-five miles per day on four-lane streets in Sacramento, sometimes in rush-hour traffic.

I was taught to follow the same rules as the drivers of cars and trucks: Stop at stop signs and red lights; signal your turns; slow down and wait for the guy in front to complete his turn before you continue straight – you know, simple stuff, the basic rules of safety for all concerned.

No conscientious cyclist I know would ever attempt to pass a car on the passenger side when that car is making a right-hand turn. This is not New York City and they are certainly are not gifted bike couriers.

They are foolish and careless and most likely will lose their faces in a terrible wreck with that kind of cycling.
