Silverton, Ute Mountain Utes receive housing grants

DOLA awards $9 million to eight Colorado developments
A grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs will bring 12 units of workforce housing to the town of Silverton. The units are “desperately needed,” said Town Administrator Bill Gardner.

Much-need workforce housing in San Juan County just received a $305,430 boost from the state, which will go to developing the Anvil Mountain Apartments.

The award is part of $9 million in grant money the Colorado Department of Local Affairs Division of Housing is dedicating to eight affordable-housing projects in the state.

The 12-unit apartment complex will be developed just outside Silverton and annexed into the town once complete. It will serve households earning at or below 30 percent to 120 percent of area’s median income.

“We have no rental workforce housing, and it’s crippling the community,” Town Administrator Bill Gardner said. “This made my day. We so desperately need this.”

San Juan County is taking the lead on the project with Silverton’s support. County officials could not be reached.

In addition to the grant, the project will receive a $1.2 million loan from the Colorado Housing Investment Fund.

The Ute Mountain Housing Authority in Montezuma County also will receive a grant of $871,000 for the South Towaoc Permanent Supportive Housing project, which will entail 11 units in Towaoc on the Ute Mountain Ute reservation. Tribal members will be able to live there as well as the homeless, those at risk of becoming homeless and people earning less than 30 percent of the area median income.

Across the state, 270,000 low-income households are paying more than 50 percent of their income to housing costs.
