Water quality, not one trout, is the issue

The “controversy” over the trout taken from the Animas River by Mr. Rob Thomas has prompted me to comment.

I have been a member of Trout Unlimited since I began fly fishing over 30 years ago. I’ve also been an active member of the local Five Rivers chapter for the last 16 years. However, I am not speaking for TU, the local chapter or anyone else.

The following comments are my own opinion based on research, discussions at local and state levels and information provided by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

I practice catch-and-release fishing because I believe it is one tool in helping to sustain trout populations in waters that are heavily fished.

However, the thought that the Animas’ dwindling trout population is due to too many anglers catching and keeping fish is not supported by the research.

In 2012, CPW conducted a creel survey which concluded that 98 percent of the trout caught in the reach through Durango were released. The CPW has stocked the Animas with 20,000 rainbow fry and 2,500 ten-inch “catchables” every year for decades.

Unfortunately, the recruitment (survival to maturity) level for these stockings has been almost zero. The disappearance cannot be attributed to over-harvesting.

The exact cause has not been determined. However, the fact that the mines surrounding Silverton have been spewing toxic metals into the Animas drainage for decades makes it likely that this is the “smoking gun.”

In speaking with fisheries biologists, I learned that Mr. Thomas’ trout was likely 5 to 6 years old, the typical life span for a rainbow trout in the wild. Yes, it would have been good if Mr. Thomas had released the fish. Unfortunately, hooking, playing, landing, photographing and then releasing a fish of that age can lead to mortality regardless of best intentions. I am in no position to judge him.

The real issue is water quality. If we are committed to a healthy and thriving population of trout, we must put our energy into improving water quality in the river. Go to www.sanjuancleanwaters.org to pledge your support.
