Groundwater monitoring on tap for talk Thursday

Effects of fracking, drilling to be discussed

Mountain Studies Institute will host a discussion Thursday about the benefits of monitoring groundwater for both residents and the oil and gas industry as the second part in the Air.Water.Energy series.

The event will occur from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Powerhouse Science Center at 1333 Camino del Rio in Durango.

The three keynote speakers will be University of Colorado-Boulder graduate research assistant Jessica Rogers, LT Environmental senior geologist Ashley Ager and Katya Hafich, an outreach hydrologist for the Colorado Water and Energy Research Center

Rogers will focus on the effects of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing as development nears more densely populated areas. She will discuss contamination by oil- and gas-related compounds and methane.

Ager will discuss state regulations for drilling near residential areas, as well as monitoring guidelines intended to ensure drinking water standards are met after oil and gas development has begun.

Hafich will provide tools that the public can use to develop plans for a baseline water quality system for domestic water wells. She’ll also offer tips on how to find free testing.

A cash bar will be available.
