Time for the big show

Improv students get ready to battle

A month ago, local comedy troupe Durango DOT Comedy put out the call for people interested in learning the ins and outs of improv. At the end of the four-week program, participants were to be divided into two teams and go head to head in a comedic battle at Slamfest.

That time has come.

On Saturday night at the Durango Arts Center, the two teams will take to the stage and compete in a series of games, watched closely by a panel of judges, to see who emerges victorious and thus claims the coveted embroidered wrestling masks of champions.

For one of the comedians who signed on to the four-week program, Saturday’s competition isn’t very daunting.

“I think I’ve finally gotten to a place in my life where I don’t really care about looking stupid anymore,” said Liz Bohm, who has driven in from Mancos every week. “I’m finally there, so it feels like the stakes are really low. You know, I’m not a heart surgeon.”

And besides the chance to get a really cool mask at the end of this, Bohm said she found a sense of community.

“It’s super-playful and it allows me to do the things that I want to do all the time anyway, but it’s hard for me to find people to do stuff like this with,” she said. “I like being goofy, and most of these people do, too, so it’s a great fit.”
