Do not make tourists pay for recycling

My wife, our friends and I recently spent two weeks in your beautiful city. It was a great experience.

The lovely home we rented was outside the city limits so there was no recycling pickup.

Undeterred, we made the effort to deliver our recyclable waste to the city’s recycling center.

We were quite surprised that we were required to pay a fee to get the city to accept the recycling materials. While the fee was modest, it certainly did nothing to encourage positive behavior on our part.

I realize that the city cannot provide free recycling services for those outside the city limits.

However, requiring your guests, on whom your tourism economy is based, to pay for making the effort to protect your local environment is counterproductive.

A solution might be to waive the fee if an out-of-state driver’s license or some other proof of visitor status is produced.
