Overnight power outages hit Bayfield, Ignacio

Thunderstorms blamed for downed line
More than 500 La Plata Electric Association customers experienced intermittent power outages Sunday night and early Monday as a result of inclement weather that damaged infrastructure.

Intermittent power outages affected more than 500 La Plata Electric Association customers Sunday and early Monday in the Bayfield and Ignacio areas.

The outages started at 6:44 p.m. Sunday when lighting and a strong weather cell moved through the area, according to a news release issued Monday morning by LPEA. Power was restored, but the circuits again locked open, cutting power at 7:08 p.m., the release said.

A tree fell through a line along County Road 516, south of Bayfield. Crews repaired the line, but a circuit again locked open at 1:25 a.m. Monday. Crews found damaged fuses in the Bayfield substation.

Power from an alternate source was fed to the 544 customers affected, and all were back in power by 3:47 a.m., according to the release.
