The West is History

50 Years Ago: GALLUP, N.M. – The penalty-plagued Durango Demons struck for 19 points in the first 6 minutes of play and closed out the contest with another 19-point flurry in the last 8 minutes to record a 38-0 victory over Gallup Friday night. It was the fifth win in six games for the Demons and assured the Red and White of another winning season.

25 Years Ago: Pagosa Springs – Thirteen demonstrators who staged a 9½ hour sit-in at the U.S. Forest Service’s office here on Tuesday in protest of logging operations were arrested and jailed, authorities said. The logging in the Sandbench area is being done by Stone Forest Industries, and Kevin Cain, operations manager, said lumberjacks for the company were pulled from the area Friday because they didn’t want to risk injuring protesters who put themselves in the path of falling trees. “At this point, my feeling is to wait until we have snow,” Cain said of the company’s plans. “There’s nothing that will deter (protesters) like cold weather.”
