Flash flood watch issued for Tuesday

Durango favored for heavy storms this afternoon
Strong thunderstorms are expected to move into the Four Corners on Tuesday, and the Durango area in particular could see heavy rain. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch from noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

A flash flood watch is in effect for Southwest Colorado and Southeast Utah from noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

Meteorologist Ellen Heffernan said a disturbance over Arizona will move into the area Tuesday afternoon, which could bring strong storms of rain, thunder and lightning.

“Storms today should be more widespread,” she said. “And showers could be quite heavy at times.”

Though storms are predicted to be scattered around Southwest Colorado, as well as Southeast Utah, the “Durango area is favored in this flow for some pretty heavy rain showers and thunderstorms,” Heffernan said.

She cautioned parents to be cautious on commutes home from the first day of school.

Wednesday is expected to see a slight decrease of regional storm activity, but the National Weather Service is expecting that to pick up the rest of the week and into the weekend.
