Genualdi leads Durango High golf to win at Pagosa Springs

Demons in full swing

Led by medalist Ryan Genualdi, the Durango boys golf team was back to its winning ways Wednesday.

Genualdi shot 78 at Pagosa Springs Golf Club to win the meet. He edged Alamosa’s Hayden Wehe, who also shot 78. Montezuma-Cortez’s Cris Rudosky finished third after shooting 81.

The Demons combined to shoot 246 as a team to win a tournament with a relatively small field. Alamosa was a second with 252.

“Ryan had a really good round again,” said DHS head coach Kirk Rawles. “It’s a small field, but it’s kind of good for some of our young players to keep putting the mileage in.”

Caleb Newman shot 83, Luke Tichi scored an 85, and Lucas Robbins signed for a 90. Robby Grogan added a 97 to round out the varsity squad.

Durango’s junior varsity shot 265. Ethan Whidden led the JV team with an 85; Kobe Szura shot 86; Luke Napier shot 94; Kyle Kirpatrick scored 95; Garret Rhodes fired a 105; and Steven Wyman rounded out the team with 106.

“Pagosa is the kind of course that if you get in trouble you can post a high number,” Rawles said. “A few guys had blowup holes here or there that cost them.”

Pagosa Springs received steady rain Tuesday night, making for a wet course Wednesday. Rawles said the ball wasn’t rolling out much.

The Demons will try to beat a similar field Thursday at Conquistador Golf Club in Cortez.
