Durango boys golf wins at Cortez

The Durango High School boys golf team went back-to-back Thursday.

After winning the Pagosa Springs tournament Wednesday, the Demons made it two in a row with a win at the Cortez Invitational on the Conqusitador Golf Course on Thursday.

The Demons took a loaded team of 12 players, and the varsity squad combined to shoot 245 to take the win ahead of Montezuma-Cortez’s 247, which was led by medalist Cristoffer Rudosky’s 1-under-par 71. Rudosky is the son of Conqusitador Golf Course PGA Professional Micah Rudosky.

Durango’s low-round was scored by senior Lucas Robbins, who shot 80. Caleb Newman came in with 82, and Ryan Genualdi shot 83. Genualdi won the event at Pagosa Springs and played with Rudosky and the No. 1 group.

“Lucas Robbins stepped up,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said. “He’s played on some strong teams the last couple of years, and it was nice to see him lead us. Ryan played with the No. 1s, so some nerves come with that. He handled it pretty well.”

The DHS varsity squad was rounded out by Luke Tichi’s 91 and a 93 from Ethan Whidden.

The Demons’ junior varsity was led by an 85 from Luke Napier. Kobe Szura shot 86, Robby Grogan finished with 87 and Kyle Kirkpatrick scored 88. Grant Hoven and Steven Wyman each shot 95, and Grant Rhodes rounded out the Demons with a 96.

Though only two weeks into the season, the Demons will head to Grand Junction to play the Southwestern League Championships next week over two days at Bookcliffs Country Club and Tiara Rado Golf Course. Scoring will be based on a two-round total.

“We’re going into the lion’s den up there,” Rawles said. “Grand Junction is loaded, and Montrose is, too. (Thursday) was another good building block for a lot of our young players. We beat seven teams out here, so it was a solid performance.”
