Ignacio football shows attitude in loss to Ellicott

Thunderhawks beat the Bobcats 52-16

The Ignacio High School football team showed a fiery new attitude on Friday night, as the Bobcats took on the Ellicott Thunderhawks.

In the end, the Thunderhawks were too powerful for the Bobcats, as Ellicott won 52-16.

Even though the score was lopsided, Ignacio didn’t go away without a fight. In fact, that’s exactly what happened.

Down 18-3 with 4 minutes, 58 second left in the second quarter, two unidentified linemen from Ellicott and Ignacio got mixed up in an on-the-field tussle that paused the game. Players from both teams had to be separated before play resumed.

Whatever the reason for the two players getting into it, Ignacio used the momentum on its ensuing possession. After an Ellicott score, Ignacio’s Lawrence Valdez took the kickoff all the way to Ellicott’s 24-yard line. Two plays later, senior quarterback Zach Weinrich hit junior wide receiver Kruz Pardo for a 27-yard touchdown.

The momentum was quickly diminished, as Ellicott scored three touchdowns in the final three minutes of the half.

Ellicott went on to score at will for the rest of the game, but with 2:04 left in the contest, backup quarterback Isiah Jacket scored on a 21-yard quarterback keeper.

Up next for Ignacio is Crownpoint at 7 p.m. next Friday at Crownpoint, New Mexico.
