Demons find new softball coach just in time

Bayfield cross country travels to Colorado Springs

The Durango High School softball team had a great opening day to the 2016 season.

Not only did the Demons find a coach at the last minute to take the reins by nabbing all-time Fort Lewis College hit leader and NCAA Woman of the Year nominee Missy Fundora to spread her knowledge, but Durango started the season on the right foot.

The acquisition of Fundora paid off immediately for the Demons (2-0), who started the new era with six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as they swept a doubleheader against Aspen, 14-2 and 16-15.

DHS scored in four of the five innings played in the mercy-rule season opener and led 8-0 after 1½ innings.

Despite allowing seven runs to the Skiers in the final inning, Durango recorded the final out just in time to hang on in Game 2.

The Demons will try to keep the momentum going as they’ll travel to play Palmer Ridge at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
