Five arrested in check forgery ring

Suspects receive felony charges

Five La Plata County residents have been arrested on felony charges in connection with a check forgery ring.

Last week, Robert Jones, 23; Robert Lamocreaux, 57; Kaitlyn Morris, 28; Alex Smith, 20; and Krysteen Williams, 41; were arrested and charged with theft, identity theft, forgery and possession of forgery devices, all felony charges.

Morris and Williams also were charged with unlawful possession of controlled substances and unlawful distribution of controlled substances, according to a news release.

On Aug. 13, employees at the First National Bank at Albertsons on Camino del Rio reported to police that several checks had been cashed within 48 hours by the same individual for amounts ranging from $3,000 to $12,000.

Durango Police and the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at a house at 29755 U.S. Highway 160 on Aug. 24.

A two-week investigation revealed several victims of check forgery, including many elderly residents. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities said there could be more arrests.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of the scheme should contact Detective Bryan Heaton at 375-4732.
