Lake Nighthorse turn lane work to begin Tuesday

Delays expected on County Road 210 through October

Construction on a left turn lane on County Road 210 to access a boat ramp at Lake Nighthorse is expected to begin Tuesday and continue through October.

La Plata County hired Four Corners Materials to complete the work, which may reduce traffic to one lane between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Motorists can expect delays up to 15 minutes.

Last spring, the county bid the $350,000 project, which had been budgeted for years.

“We didn’t want to get ahead of ourselves with Lake Nighthorse,” La Plata County Engineer Jim Davis told county commissioners at the time.

It’s an optimistic project, implying that one day Lake Nighthorse will be open for recreation, though it has remained off limits to such activity since the lake was filled in 2011.

Meanwhile, an environmental analysis that allowed uses at the lake and the preservation of its surrounding resources remains under review by the Bureau of Reclamation. The window for public comments on the document ended in May.
