Soggy weather expected to persist

Snow likely in the high country by Friday morning
Wednesday morning proved to be rainy – giving passengers on the morning Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train to Silverton an added element to deal with. Precipitation is expected through the weekend.

Soggy weather in Southwest Colorado is here to stay through the end of the week – including a possibility of snow accumulation Thursday night at elevations above 9,000 feet.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction are calling for off-and-on rain for the remainder of the week, but it won’t be as persistent as Tuesday night, when the remnants from a Pacific hurricane streamed across the Southwest, said Norv Larson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

A cold front is expected to arrive Thursday, creating conditions conducive for snow late Thursday and early Friday above 9,000 feet, he said.

The moisture and cooler temperatures arrive right on cue with Thursday’s autumnal equinox – which marks the period of equal day and night.

“We’re in that transitional period from summer to winter, so we’re going to see deeper more energetic systems begin to move through the area here in the ensuing days,” Larson said.
