Sex offender captured near Norwood during manhunt

Man surrenders without incident after eluding deputies

A registered sex offender who snipped his ankle-monitoring bracelet and walked away from a work-release program was captured Thursday afternoon in Norwood, about 35 miles west of Telluride.

Lloyd Allen Beard, 48, was arrested without incident about 12:45 p.m. after trying to elude deputies, said San Miguel Sheriff Bill Masters.

Beard absconded from his work-release program Tuesday in Montrose and was spotted Wednesday in the Norwood area. The Sheriff’s Office notified the public through newspapers and social media of Beard’s disappearance and quickly started receiving reports of sightings, Masters said.

He apparently contacted several acquaintances in the Norwood area asking for shelter from law enforcement, Masters said.

“Most of them didn’t want the attention of the police so they were calling us and letting us know the person had been there,” he said.

Sheriff’s deputies came close to making contact with Beard a couple of times, but he kept running off into the woods, he said.

In one of those eluding attempts, Beard came into contact with deputies pursuing him in the woods, and he made his way to a road where he raised his hands and surrendered, Masters said.
