Ignacio football falls back to .500 with loss to Pagosa Springs

Pagosa Pirates run past Ignacio

Ignacio High School couldn’t keep its winning streak alive in its home opener.

The Bobcats returned home with a 2-1 record after earning consecutive wins for the first time since 2013. But Pagosa Springs (1-3) came into Ignacio and secured a 25-7 victory to send Ignacio to 2-2 this season.

Ignacio trailed 25-0 before scoring on a pass from Isiah Jacket to Marcus Champman in the game’s final two minutes.

The first score for the Pirates came soon after an interception thrown on the first play from scrimmage by IHS starting quarterback Zach Weinreich. Pagosa Springs made it 7-0 with 10:56 to go in the first quarter on a Connor Aragon 1-yard touchdown run. Aragon finished with 58 rushing yards on 18 carries.

Pagosa Springs tacked on another score in the second quarter when Cade Cowan hit Noah Haarmann on a 6-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. Haarmann also had the interception for Pagosa on the opening drive.

A 23-yard field goal by Josh Kuening made it 17-0 in favor of the Pirates at the end of the third quarter. A safety soon gave Pagosa Springs a 19-0 advantage. Weinreich was being sacked in the end zone by Aragon and was called for intentional grounding, leading to the safety.

It was a 3-yard touchdown run by Pagosa’s Ty Kimsey that gave the Pirates a 25-0 lead. Kimsey finishe with 65 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Weinreich finished 7-of-19 passing for 53 yards and one interception for IHS. Jacket was 7-of-9 for 64 yards and one touchdown. Chapman had two catches for 20 yards, Kruz Pardo snagged four passes for 31 receiving yards, and Lawrence Valdez also had four catches for 25 yards for the Bobcats.

Ignacio will hit the road next week to face Monte Vista to begin league play.
