Prep Roundup: Durango girls win league title; Bayfield pays back Alamosa

The Durango girls cross country team has been dominant this season, and they weren’t going to let that change on Saturday with a Southwestern League Championship on the line.

The girls finished second overall behind Battle Mountain at Connected Lakes State Park in Grand Junction, but won the Southwestern League handily with the runner-up effort. Freshman Madeleine Burns’ time of 19 minutes, 10 seconds earned her a sixth-place finish and highlighted a Demons crew that had four more runners in the top-15.

Abby Scott (19:19) finished ninth, Anna Smagacz (19:19) was 10th, Bekah Moenning (19:45) was 12th and Sarah Smagacz (20:00) crossed in 14th.

“Madeleine Burns ran a phenomenal race,” Durango head coach David McMillan said. “The progress has been really impressive. For such a young team to take everyone else apart the way they have this season has been remarkable.”

On the boys side, DHS senior Harry Steinberg is starting to hit his stride.

Steinberg finished third overall with a time of 15:55, a mark that was better than any runner from last year’s decorated bunch except for Demons All-Stater Benjamin Lachelt.

The Demons finished third overall with 101 points, 21 points behind meet and now league champion Montrose. Ian Meek’s time of 15:31 led the Indians, who also had the second-place finisher in Evan Graff (15:39).

“Harry ran a stunner (Saturday) that was just a beautiful effort,” McMillan said. “He had been running conservatively and I let him know that it might be time to start running with the big boys. The team as a whole is getting better, getting stronger.”

Coltin Gallegos ran a lifetime best time of 16:41 and finished 20th. Marcus Flint ran the same time and finished a spot behind. Aidan Fitzgerald (16:57) finished 27th and Pablo Smagacz (17:24) was 36th.

Connor Henry and Logan Fullington each added a goal and Trey Furnas recorded another shutout in the win.

Furnas and the Demons didn’t let the quick turnaround affect them as they blanked Grand Junction (7-2, 2-1 5A/4A SWL) 2-0 on Saturday. Elijah Fenton setup goals for Max Wilson and Luke Stetler to rack up the team’s fifth consecutive victory and the sixth shutout for Furnas.

Durango will host Grand Junction at 1 p.m. Saturday on the new DHS turf field.

Girls Volleyball

Bayfield 3, Alamosa 0

Girls VolleyballThe last Bayfield volleyball match against Alamosa was a heartbreaker for the Wolverines. BHS led 2-0 until Alamosa came back and stole the match 3-2. Saturday at Alamosa, the Wolverines didn’t let it happen again.

Bayfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets by the scores of 25-18, and finished the job with a 25-18 third set win to sweep the Mean Moose on their own turf. The win marks the first time in two years Bayfield (6-3, 3-0 3A Intermountain League) has gotten the better of Alamosa.

Courtney Bayles led BHS with 23 assists.

“It was a great example of team effort,” Bayfield head coach Terene Foutz wrote in an email to The Durango Herald. “The entire roster contributed in a solid fashion.”
