Neighbors: A celebration of 100 years

Ruby Lee Grannis, center, celebrated her 100th birthday recently with, from left, front row, her great-great-grandsons Gideon and Ezra Mrotzek, and back row, great-grandson Silas Mrotzek, great-granddaughter Jennifer Mrotzek, granddaughter Lillie Startare, and great-grandson William Startare. Her shirt says, “It took me 100 years to look this good.”

Take time to wish these folks happy birthday as they celebrate their Libra birthdays – although I recently read the zodiac signs have changed because of a difference in the way the earth spins as the North Pole shifts slightly, so I’m not sure they are Libras anymore! Here’s to Lori Jackson, Pat Campbell, Andy Kraftherfer, Ward Lee, Peggy Herrera, Brendon Shaline, Chase Collins, John Wells, Jim Burpee, Kim Eisner, Margaret Vallejos, Linkin Griego, Dewey Peden, Mike Milner, Ulys Gardella, Anna Marie Bishop, Ruth Bingham, Irene Nix, Bob Galbraith, Jan Kyser, Joan Southcotte, Jordan Pothoff, Todd Sieger, Susan Kolb, Everett Manson, Paul Plvan, Bruce Forsyth, Laveda Knibbe, Brian Grandin, Jeremy Nedergaard, Abigail Stier, Bruce Nye, Mae Reed, Jessica Steele-Hemenover, Ben Southworth, Lynne Murison, Steve Jackson, Jill Rogers and Josh Spaeder.

Special birthday greetings go out to one of my favorite colleagues, Judith Reynolds.

Special belated birthday greetings go to Ruby Lee Grannis, who turned 100 during the late summer. I didn’t get the info from her family for a few weeks, and then I was off, so ... She was fêted by four of the five generations of her family – she has lost both of her sons – granddaughter Lillie Startare, Startare’s son and daughter, William Startare and Jennifer Mrotzek, and Grannis’ three great-great-grandsons Silas, Gideon and Ezra Mrotzek, from Eureka, California.

Grannis is a woman after my heart – she loves to celebrate birthdays with a margarita, and her centennial was no exception. She’s known for saying, “Daddy says one is OK, but two is too many!”

It’s cool enough to cuddle for the anniversaries of Will and Carol Connelly, Nick and Ann Spence, Darrell and Diane Gardner, Curtis and Anne Swanson, Scott and Sharon Kuhn, Lynn and Jack Emerson, David and Genna Kidd and Ed and Suzanne Cash.

Check back at durangoherald.com for more Neighbors stories and photos. Neighbors moves this week to its new home on Sunday in the print edition of The Durango Herald.

Here’s how to reach me: neighbors@durangoherald.com; phone 375-4584; mail items to the Herald; or drop them off at the front desk. Please include contact names and phone numbers for all items. Follow me on Twitter @Ann_Neighbors.

I am happy to consider photos for Neighbors, but they must be high-quality, high-resolution photos (at least 1 MB of memory) and include no more than three to five people. I need to know who’s who, left to right, and who to credit with the photo. Candid photos are better than posed, and photos should be submitted as JPG or TIF attachments.
