People, businesses do try to be inclusive

I read a recent article (Herald, Sept. 15) concerning Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuits with some dismay, remembering the multi-business lawsuits filed by the Florida man visiting Durango some months ago.

I have cancer in my skull that has rendered me extremely sensitive to sound, so I can no longer enjoy crowded restaurants – much less any of our wonderful music venues and events. Am I bummed out about it? Sure – but I can’t see demanding reduced decibels or declaring, “I’ll sue and ruin your business and everyone else’s enjoyment.”

Of course that sounds frivolous, but every one of us – at least eventually – has limitations that prevent our access to every single place we’d like to go. They aren’t going to stop making movies because the blind can’t view them.

Admittedly, I haven’t read the entire text of any bills or laws, but I do know that people, especially small businesses, want and try to be inclusive to the very best of their abilities. Sometimes it takes time, and sometimes you’re just out of luck. Part of being a mature, reasonable human is trying to work with others, then finding your niche and thanking your lucky stars for what you do have.
