74 race for fun at Wolf Creek

Just before the big game, 74 skiers and snowboarders participated Sunday in the Super Bowl Sunday Fun Race at Wolf Creek Ski Area.

People from age 5 to over 70 raced, and times ranged from minutes to the day’s fastest run, Don Sinkey of Pagosa Springs, who finished in 23.60 seconds. He won the men’s 51-60 division.

The fastest women’s time was by Nikki Horrocks of South Fork, who finished in 27.46 in the women’s 31-35 division. Annabelle Bowles of Pagosa Springs had the second-fastest time and won the girls 12-14 division in 27.88.

The racers were treated to a bluebird day as well as 7 inches of new snow, according to a news release from Wolf Creek.

Two men finished under 25 seconds and won their respective age groups. Buzz Burke of Pagosa Springs won the men’s 61-70 age group in 24.6 seconds and Chris Devine of Durango won the men’s 26-30 group in 24.80 seconds.

Wolf Creek will have another fun race this Sunday, free and open to both skiers and snowboarders. Registration is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Raven’s Nest. The super giant slalom race course opens at 11 a.m.

On Saturday, Wolf Creek is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
