Robbins rounds out golf season at CHSAA state championships for Durango

DHS golfer wraps up state trip

Lucas Robbins had to claw his way through his entire golf career at Durango High School, and he found the finish line Tuesday.

The DHS senior completed play at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Boys Golf State Championships at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale. Robbins shot 12-over-par 84 on Monday and 21-over on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 69th place overall.

Luke Trujillo of Discovery Canyon won the state title in a playoff with defending champion Jackson Solem of Silver Creek. Both boys finished the 36 holes at 4-under par and needed two playoff holes to decide the champion. Cole Krantz of Windsor was third one shot back. Montrose’s Glen-Michael Mihavetz finished in a tie for fourth at 1-over.

Discovery Canyon won the team competition at 6-over. Montrose was second at 21-over, and Valor Christian was third at 25-over.

Robbins was Durango’s lone qualifier for state after the entire DHS team had made the trip three consecutive years after winning regionals.

Robbins shined at regionals to earn his place.

“I’m proud of what he did at regionals to get to state,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said. “He never really got anything going the two days here. A few bad swings took to wind out of his sails.”

Robbins’ trip to state was remarkable given his commitment to two sports. He also competes on the mountain bike team at Durango High, which is a top team in the state. He competed in both seasons simultaneously this fall.

“He had a lot on his plate,” Rawles said. “Not only that, but he’s an all-state academic performer. I couldn’t be more proud of him to step up and make it happen.”

Rawles will hope to get the entire DHS team back to state next year with a loaded group of young players who saw varsity playing time in 2016.

“I’m optimistic,” he said. “We have some great freshmen, sophomores and juniors returning.

“But I’m really happy with this season and all the seniors. Robby Grogan and Kobe Szura really helped make every trip fun. They were a great group.”
