We all deserve better for LPEA board

Davin Montoya has been a director at La Plata Electric Association since the 1990s. I had the “privilege” of seeing him in action twice this past year as president of the board, and both times, I was disappointed by his lack of civility to the co-op members who had taken time and energy to attend a monthly meeting to express concerns.

At both meetings, he attempted to restrain discussions from the members who had shown up to speak. It would seem that the current LPEA board is more interested in the “status quo” than with doing the work they are elected to perform.

LPEA has a contract with Tri-State that we cannot walk away from. We are required under the current terms to purchase 95 percent of our energy from Tri-State, and 75 percent of that is from coal. We can demand better from Tri-State, and we can demand better from LPEA.

It’s time for the LPEA board leadership to be replaced with a fresh and considerate candidate. We are lucky to have a cooperative that should clearly represent the growing concerns in this community about climate change and wanting to produce more clean energy locally.

Please vote for Kim Martin, a smart, responsible, open-minded candidate who will listen to all points of view and use her years of community experience to move us all forward.
