Ignacio football goes backwards, falls to Monte Vista

Ignacio shut out in league opener

It’s been a great bounce-back year so far for Ignacio High School’s football team, but after back-to-back wins earlier in the season, the Bobcats slipped up Friday at Monte Vista.

Ignacio had trouble from the opening kickoff and committed numerous penalties that contributed to the 42-0 shutout loss to open 1A Southern Peaks League play.

“We just got out-manned, out-powered, and committed way too many mental mistakes,” Ignacio coach Ponch Garcia said. “Honestly, we continued to shoot ourselves in the foot jumping offsides and doing silly things. We would gain 20 or 30 yards and go backwards with penalties.”

The Bobcats (2-3, 0-1 1A Southern Peaks) trailed 35-0 after a dominant first half by the home team. Monte Vista 2-3, 1-0 1A Southern Peaks) capitalized on the many Bobcats infractions and Ignacio couldn’t recover from the free yardage they gave up all night. However, the team will return home next week to play Dolores for homecoming, and the IHS faithful have a team they can be proud of.

“Monte Vista is a really well-coached and good team, so we can’t ignore the growth we’ve had here with our squad,” Garcia said. “These kids are working so hard and the results are showing for the most part. The players and coaches need to be more prepared next week, and the kids are going to be fired up for homecoming.”

The Bobcats homecoming game against Dolores will be at 7 p.m. Friday at IHS.
