Durangoans pose questions for Mike Pence

Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence is set to speak at noon Wednesday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. We asked more than a dozen residents Tuesday what they would like to ask Pence if they could ask anything.

Several wondered how he can in good conscience support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, while others wanted to know his stance on policies such as jobs, reproductive health and equal pay for women. And a few didn’t know who Pence is.

Here are some of the questions residents have for Pence:

“I’m wondering why he would choose to support Trump. I guess I’m wondering if he feels he’s made a mistake and how he could overlook Trump’s characteristics. He demonstrates extreme intolerance, and that’s not what we’re really about as a country. What do you want your legacy to be?”

Sheryl McGourty, 43,

“What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?”

Annessa Comfort, 22,

“I’d be curious to know his stance on public lands and expanding wilderness areas and national parks.”

Rica Fulton, 24,

“What are their plans going to be to get the jobs back in here versus other countries?”

Stephen Beck, 54,

“¿Porqué?”

Anthony Reinert, 24,

“If Trump is successful at being elected, what is the first bit of advice that you’re going to tell him that he needs to start off right and lead the country correctly?”

Kayo Folsom, 63,

Durango, unaffiliated

“Why would you want to get rid of Planned Parenthood when it offers so many options for low-income people, including birth control, which is great?”

Rhita Batiste,38,

Durango, unaffiliated

“How can you make the election more about the people and less about the pettiness?”

Tawny Nicoly, 36,

Durango, Democrat (undecided)

“Why would you agree to be the vice president candidate with Trump?”

Cindy Arnold Humiston, 56,

“Women generally earn 70 percent of what men make for the same job. Do women in the workforce deserve equal pay? Do men deserve paternity leave?”

Lauren Hayes, 31,

Durango, Democrat

“I just can’t imagine how he can be comfortable running with someone who behaves so contrary to good manners and good sense. How can he feel comfortable with Trump? How can he sleep at night?”

Cate Smock, 59,

Pagosa Springs, Democrat

“How can he consciously stand up for Donald Trump?”

Rob Kolter, 57,
