Take time for community involvement

In the 2012 election, only 70 percent of registered Coloradoans voted, according to Colorado Civic Health Forum. Yet, voting is a paramount aspect of civil engagement – a prime opportunity to have a voice in our community and affect change in our government and civic systems. Our goal should be 100 percent participation!

Please make sure you fill out your ballot and mail it in, or drop it off at one of the four county drop-off locations, as soon as you receive it. But being civically engaged involves so much more – and doesn’t have to be partisan. Consider getting involved locally now.

There are many ways. Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio and La Plata County boards and committees have openings for members, and diverse voices and input are needed – please consider applying. Consider attending a City Council or county commissioners’ meeting, or visit with our county commissioners during their designated office hours. Go help a neighbor or volunteer at a nonprofit, or apply for Leadership La Plata’s next class in 2017.

Be empowered to be the change in our community. You’ll be supporting the great things that happen in La Plata County every day!
