Fourth-grade Durango YAFL team set for Titan-sized Super Bowl rematch

One Durango team reaches Super Bowl

Only one remains. The rematch is on.

Three Durango Young America Football League teams advanced to the semifinals, but only one advanced to reach Super Bowl Saturday in Farmington.

After earning a 20-0 win against Bayfield, the fourth-grade Demons will rematch the Farmington Titans for this year’s Super Bowl. The same two teams squared off a year ago, with a late Durango drive stalling inside the five-yard-line as time expired on a potential game-winning drive.

Durango earned some revenge in the regular season this year with a big win, but that game is a distant memory going into championship Saturday.

Quarterback Linkin Griego helped lead the charge in last Saturday’s win against Bayfield. He passed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Malakai Baier hauled in a touchdown pass to go with 35 receiving yards, and Cully Feeney added 80 rushing yards and 15 receiving yards. Ryan Dugan’s incredible season continued with two touchdowns, as he returned a kickoff for a score and caught the other Griego scoring pass. He also tied with Cole Pontine for a team-high four tackles on defense. The play of linebackers Otto Aaland and Wyatt Bartel also helped carry the defense in the shutout performance.

The fourth-grade Super Bowl will be contested at 11 a.m. Saturday at Doc Jones Field in Farmington.

Durango’s third- and sixth-grade teams were shutout in the semifinals.

The third-graders fell 19-0 to Aztec, which will play Bayfield for the championship at 9 a.m. Saturday at Doc Jones Field. Cooper Mitchell was held to 28 rushing yards for Durango in the semifinals. Mitchell and Brady Hoerl led the defense with eight tackles, and Hoerl forced and recovered one fumble.

The sixth-grade team fell 26-0 to the Farmington Panthers, as four fumbles and a litany of other errors ended the Demons’ season. The sixth-grade players will split up next year at their respective middle schools before coming together again at Durango High School.

The fifth-grade Super Bowl will be fought for by the Aztec Tigers and Cortez. The Tigers defeated Bayfield to reach the Super Bowl, while Cortez beat the Aztec Warriors.
