Organization's fundraiser is all about shoes

The Henry Strater Theatre has played host to nearly every conceivable description of performance art in its 50-year history, but this weekend brings something that's new and different even by the standards of the venerable venue. 'Tis the Season

The Durango Arts Center promises to be one of the busiest spots in town today with the joint opening of the annual "Holiday Art Ole!" and a new exhibit in the upstairs Art Library. We'll begin downstairs and work up from there. "Holiday Art Ole!" is a hybrid art show and holiday bazaar that is the product of 31 local and regional artists from Durango, Mancos, Farmington, Cortez, Dolores and even Austin, Texas, (The Texan is Nina Mihn, who arrives with a carload of glasswork and handmade book bags). Artists to host tour of their home studio

It's sometimes hard to think of husband and wife Dave Sime and Connie Morse as anything but an inseparable pair: Their lives and careers are forever intertwined - but even a passing glance at their artwork reveals two very different artists. They just happen to live under the same roof. Sime and Morse were both accepted into the prestigious 40th annual Mountain Oyster Club show in Tucson, Ariz., which opens this weekend, but neither will be on hand for Saturday's opening reception. Instead, they'll stay at home in the Animas Valley and welcome guests for an open studio tour Saturday and Sunday. Updated - Friday, November 20, 2009 12:00AM

Family bluegrass band rolls into concert hall

It can only be called a scheduling quirk when a bluegrass band as hot as Cherryholmes hasn't played in a town with a bluegrass scene as hot as Durango's, but that anomaly will be a thing of the past when the Southern California family band takes the stage tonight at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall. The band's name is also the family name - like The Cowsills or their television alter-egos The Partridge Family, but with a dad. Jere Cherryholmes was a carpenter for the Los Angeles school system before the untimely death of his daughter Shelly prompted him and his wife, Sandy Lee, and the rest of the family, to take up bluegrass music as a healing diversion in 1999. Winfrey to end show in 2011 (AP)

CHICAGO - "The Oprah Winfrey Show,'' an iconic broadcast that began as a local Chicago talk show and grew over two decades into the foundation of a media empire worth billions, will end its run in 2011 after 25 seasons on the air, Winfrey's production company said Thursday. Winfrey, who from a seat on the couch of her set in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood became a billionaire and one of the most powerful women in entertainment, plans to announce the final date for her show during a live broadcast today, said Harpo Productions Inc. Locals wanted for Broadway show

When Neil Berg's critically-acclaimed "100 Years of Broadway" show visits the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall in January, expect to see a few local hams on stage alongside the cast of Broadway stars. The show is a retrospective of Broadway's greatest hits, with selections from "Phantom of the Opera," "Les Miserables," "Jekyll and Hyde," "Fiddler on the Roof" and others. A panel of producers, cast members and Berg himself will select one or two local singer-dancers and as many as 10 runners-up to perform "Seasons of Love," from the Broadway smash "Rent."
