Durango high school teacher and Lawn Chair King Erik Nordstrom is in his third year herding the music talent for this event, and this is the best lineup yet. His band will be joined by Baby Toro from Mancos, Durango's Soda Jerks, The Brent Berry Band from Taos via Santa Fe via Lawrence, Kan., and Austin headliner Dave Insley's Careless Smokers. Insley also will perform Saturday evening at the Abbey Theatre and the Brent Berry Band will perform that night at the Summit.
Insley's been pulling through town once a year or so for about the last decade. His baritone voice is the identifiable sound of his band's mix of country, rockabilly and rock 'n' roll, right alongside the guitar work of Dale X Allen. Allen's vintage telecaster provides great fills right out of a spaghetti western, surf rock and Texas swing songbook. You may remember Allen from being here last month with his band Genuine Cowhide. In addition to Insley and Allen, the Careless Smokers are made up of Daniel Jones on drums and Carl Cooley on bass. Bring your two-stepping boots.
The Who's Your Daddy opener right now stands as my favorite new local band. Baby Toro is Hardison Collins and Lindsay Isbell, who both play guitar and sing. This is no average folk duo, with a sound that is more likened to electric-folk-surf-goth. The pair has been playing publicly for a little more than a year, and Saturday's street party will be their second time playing in Durango.
Different genres are well-represented because of Nordstrom, which is something he set out to do. The Soda Jerks will provide the rockabilly, the Brent Berry Band will provide the folk-bluegrass-jam, and the Lawn Chair Kings will provide the western garage and straight-up rock 'n' roll. This event, like any street festival, also enables these bands to show off their music to a wide audience. I'd wager that you won't find many of the attendees at this event at a random club or bar show at 11 p.m. on a Saturday night.
It's not just all music, either. Of course, there will be a beer garden (this is a Durango street festival, after all) and food, in addition to the random jumpy castle/moon bounce, a water zone for the kids, face painting, and arts and crafts.
Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there, which proudly includes yours truly.
