Sinister Shadows will present an original murder mystery, “The Counterfeit Murders” at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Arts Center. Tickets cost $35 for adults and $30 for children and are available at the DAC box office at 802 E. Second Ave. For more information, call 259-2606 or e-mail sinistershadows@bresnan.net.
Sinister Shadows, the original murder mystery troupe, will bring its latest creation, "The Counterfeit Murders," to the Durango Arts Center stage Saturday for a one-time-only performance. The show is a fundraiser for the DAC.
Set during Prohibition in the 1920s, "Counterfeit" will challenge the audience to assist, or possibly accuse, Detective Al E. Gator in solving the murderous shenanigans of bootleggers Dickie and Harry Newt, speakeasy owner Croc O. Dial, reporter Anna Conda and bankteller Sally Mander.
Like all Sinister Shadows productions, the story is an original script written by Carrie Foisel and Darla Hill, who also act in the play. Jim Hill, Bob Foisel and Debby Hoover round out the cast. The troupe formed in 2007 and often uses other local actors when needed, but all members have full-time jobs.
"It lets us take out our frustrations - safely - and it's great therapy," Darla Hill said.
Audience members sit at shared tables, and each group works as a team to try to solve the crime. A clue sheet is provided, but spectators also must pay close attention to catch any dead giveaways. A prize will be given to the winning team, and a booby prize will be awarded for the poorest or most illogical solution to the crime.
The actors dress in period attire - all of Hill and Foisel's scripts are set between the 1880s and 1950s - and audience members are encouraged to do the same. The clients - in this case the DAC staff - tell the authors what era they will see, and each script is customized to that night's performance.
If you're not fortunate enough to catch "The Counterfeit Murders" on Saturday night, Sinister Shadows' next whodunit will take place July 25 at the Bent Elbow in Silverton.
