Joan Osborne and The Holmes Brothers, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall. Tickets cost $40-$50 and are available by phone at 247-7657, online at www.durangoconcerts.com or at the downtown ticket office at Seventh Street and Main Avenue.
The Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall is serving up a midweek treat for music lovers Wednesday with a twin bill featuring co-headliners Joan Osborne and The Holmes Brothers. Mississippi country-rock bluesman Paul Thorn will open the show.
Best known for her smash single “One of Us,” Osborne is much more than a one-hit wonder. She roped in an entire generation of new fans in 2004 touring with The Dead as the band’s lead vocalist for two years and is on the short list of the top female blues and soul singers performing today.
Her most recent release is 2008’s “Little Wild One,” which is more rock than blues, but she also played on The Holmes Brothers’ “State of Grace” along with Roseanne Cash and Levon Helm.
The trio, who are brothers Sherman and Wendell Holmes with drummer Popsy Dixon, will share the stage with Osborne for most of the show, though she and the trio will perform their own songs throughout.
The Holmes Brothers, surprisingly, didn’t get their official start in the music business until 1989 when they signed with Rounder Records. Since then, they’ve established themselves as one of the most entertaining live acts on the R&B circuit, mixing soul, blues, roots and gospel in three-part harmony. Together with Osborne, the stage show has played to rave reviews in every city in which it’s stopped on the current tour.
They’re also a favorite of the National Public Radio crowd, having appeared on “The World Café,” “Live from Mountain Stage” and “All Things Considered.” Osborne also has pledged to produce The Holmes Brothers’ next studio release.
