United Way staying busy helping our community

I just arrived in San Antonio to see family for my summer vacation. The drive was uneventful, but long. On the 1,000-mile journey, I had time to reflect on everything United Way has accomplished this year.

United Way partnered with El Pomar Foundation in Colorado Springs to help invest $15,000 in Southwest Colorado early in the year. We funneled $5,000 to Pagosa Outreach Connection, a financial- support program for families in Archuleta County, and United Way directed $10,000 to Mercy Regional Medical Center's Health Services Clinic.

Next, United Way participated in four annual review processes which draw down FEMA Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds for our region. United Way has a seat on the board that determines which local food and shelter providers receive the money. Working alongside county governments and social-service groups, nearly $60,000 was allocated to food and shelter organizations across the region.

United Way also helped distribute an additional $24,000 in FEMA EFSP funding to regional emergency-service provider agencies.

In late April, United Way began the process of setting the annual campaign goal for the fall and winter. This process coordinates 50 volunteers across the region. These volunteers review funding requests from nonprofit organizations addressing local needs. The volunteers create funding recommendations, which form the annual campaign goal.

United Way's board of directors was presented with these funding recommendations last week, along with the fundraising campaign goal. The recommendations and goal were unanimously approved. United Way's fundraising goal for the fall will be $755,000. If achieved, this will allow United Way to support more than 80 programs across our region that are helping people every day.

The staff and volunteers at United Way also have been hard at work putting together plans for this year's fundraising campaign. United Way and the Durango High Noon Rotary Club are planning the 14th annual golf tournament. Rotarians Mike Kane Jr. of M and M Enterprises, Ted Weirather, Nancy Bennett of the Glacier Club and myself have a wonderful tournament planned for July 17. Only three sponsorships remain unsold, and golf teams are going to sell out in the next couple of weeks. Call United Way at 247-9444 to learn more.

United Way also has been working hard on a new fundraiser at the La Plata County Fair Demolition Derby on August 8. Look for us that morning.

We also are partnering with Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort for the second year in a row on the San Juan Brew Fest, to be held Aug. 30. United Way is working with Four Corners Broadcasting on the 13th annual Radiothon, to be broadcast Sept. 11 this year. Plans are also in the works for a golf tournament in Pagosa Springs on Aug. 15, and the Taste of the Seasons event in Dolores at the Four Seasons Greenhouse and Nursery on December 3.

Your donations to United Way allow all of this to happen and much more.

Thank you for your continued support.

Tim Walsworth is president and CEO of United Way of Southwest Colorado.
