Southwest Colorado exhibits strong support for United Way

Article Last Updated; Wednesday, October 28, 2009  12:01AM

My parents were in town last week and I started thinking about what makes Southwest Colorado such a great place to live and to visit.

My answer is borrowed from something Jeff Hammond from Basin Printing told me once. He said it was the people.

My job allows me to see the generosity of the residents of our community. From the little girl who put $2 in a tip jar at a fundraising event United Way held the other day, to the donor who recently sent United Way a $4,000 check, to the volunteer who signs up for every job, Southwest Colorado is filled with generous people who keep this a great place for everyone.

One such person is Jeannie Bennett at La Plata Electric Association. She has a long history of supporting our community in many different ways. She currently serves us all through her work at LPEA. Bennett has generated an incredible amount of resources for local nonprofits and for local people in need through her fun and creative fundraising and community involvement. United Way extends a big thank you to Bennett for her never-ending creativity and passion for our community.

Sarah Jacobson works for La Plata County. Everyone who knows Jacobson always says how friendly she is. She treats everyone with respect and is a great ambassador for county government. Jacobson is United Way’s main contact for the employee campaign at the county. Thanks to Jacobson for her public service.

Jeff Murray of Durango Harley-Davidson is yet another example of what makes our community so special. Murray and his business support countless nonprofit events. He recently was  injured and is recovering at home. We wish him a speedy recovery.

We recently lost two people who have helped our community in countless ways.

John Mainwaring was a friend to many nonprofit organizations and was a great representative for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.

Morley Ballantine was a force for our community and without her, many things we  enjoy today would not be possible. Condolences go to the Mainwaring and Ballantine family.

I encourage everyone in Southwest Colorado to be more like Jeannie, Sarah, Jeff, John and Morley. United Way of Southwest Colorado is one of many options residents of Southwest Colorado have to put their talents to work for our community.

The annual United Way fundraising drive is under way with donations being received every day. UPS employees donated more than $10,000 and counting. BP employees have donated $33,000 and counting. Southwest Colorado Mental Health Center employees pledged more than $12,000 for United Way. Opening the mail at United Way at this time of year is very inspiring.

United Way’s fundraising goal for all of Southwest Colorado is $750,000. As of
Oct. 21, United Way has received $216,000 in donations and pledges. This is one of the toughest fundraising environments I have seen in well over a decade, and yet our community continues to give. Thank you for your support. Let’s keep working together to keep our community healthy for all who live here.

If you want to get more involved, call United Way at 247-9444 to learn more.

Tim Walsworth is president
and CEO for United Way
