Early voting will begin Monday and continues through Oct. 31. Eligible voters may vote at either the La Plata County Courthouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or at the new Bayfield Town Hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
La Plata County polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. The deadline to register to vote in La Plata County was Oct. 6.
This year's ballot is daunting in its length. La Plata County voters will be asked to decide 17 elected offices, 10 amendments and four referendums. City residents also will be faced with a ballot question to bond $17.5 million for the reconstruction of Florida Road. The ballot would have been even longer, but Amendments 53, 55, 56 and 57 were withdrawn from the ballot in recent weeks.
Registered voters may also vote from the comfort of home by taking advantage of mail-in ballots, which may be requested in person at the county courthouse or online. Despite information circulating among residents, a representative with the clerk's office said no mail-in ballots have been returned for insufficient postage. A ballot enclosed in its designated envelope weighs .8 ounces, and the limit to use a 42-cent First Class stamp on a letter is 1 ounce.
Sharon Radde, the finance supervisor at the U.S. Post Office in Durango, said if a voter has to include extra documentation, such as a copy of a driver's license, it does push the weight over the First Class limit to 59 cents. It could also be bumped into the higher price range if the ballot is folded improperly, causing the envelope to be more than a quarter-inch thick. However, she said no stamped ballots will be returned even if they are over the weight or thickness limit.
"We're instructed not to return the ballots; no matter what postage they put on it, we're to deliver it to the clerks and they'll guarantee it," Radde said.
All mail-in ballots must be postmarked by Oct. 28 or delivered in person to the county clerk's office by Oct. 31.
