Tam Smith of Apex, N.C., was recently hired as principal of the school, which serves 510 students in grades six through eight.
Smith served as assistant principal of Lufkin Road Middle School in Apex for the last two years. Before that, he was assistant principal for intervention at Cary High School in Cary, N.C., for five years.
Smith was educated in England and the United States. An avid athlete, Smith has competed in soccer, rugby, cricket, football and track. He was hired from among 34 candidates.
Hankins' resignation was announced in March and went into effect in June. He had led Miller since 2005.
Durango School District 9-R also announced Wednesday that a Brighton man has been hired as executive director of human resources. Mathew Neal held the same position in the fast-growing Brighton School District north of Denver.
Neal succeeds Rory Mullet, who served as interim director of human resources. Neal was chosen from among 17 candidates.
