"I've been giving thought to running for the seat," he told The Durango Herald. "I've been talking with a number of people, and I have received a lot of positive feedback."
He said many of the issues he would focus on are statewide problems. He said he would ensure that opportunities for good jobs, the health of the local economy, public safety and health care are a few of his main concerns.
Lyon said his record as a councilor shows he can work cooperatively with others.
If Lyon decides to run, he will enter into a primary against businessman Lew Webb, who has announced his intention to seek the GOP's nomination in the district. Webb said that if Lyon wants to engage in a primary battle that is fine.
"Hopefully it will give residents two very good choices to choose from," he said.
Lyon, 45, has been a Durango resident since 1982. He has a wife, Chris, and two children, Natalie and Haleigh.
He has been a city official for six years. He served on the Planning Commission for two years and has been a councilor for four. He was re-elected last year for another two-year term on the City Council.
He is also a Fort Lewis College business professor and graduated from the college in 1987. He went to Thunderbird School of Global Management, has worked for Chevron Corp. in San Francisco and has his doctorate in management strategy from the University of Kentucky.
He said if he decides to run, he will continue to be honored to work with the city.
"I have enjoyed my service to this city," he said. "I know it will continue to be rewarding and flattering."
The state House seat is currently held by Rep. Ellen Roberts, a Durango Republican who has announced she will run for the state Senate in 2010.
On the Democratic side, executive director of the National Conservation System Foundation Brian O'Donnell said he will announce within the next two weeks if we will be competing for the district.
"I have a couple people to check in with, and then will be making my decision here shortly," he said.
