Durango and the surrounding area are under a winter storm warning as the first major storm of the season moves through the Four Corners.
The slow-moving storm is expected to drop up to 6 inches of snow at lower elevations and a foot or more in the mountains before moving out of the area Thursday, said John Kyle, who tracks data for the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. The warning is in effect until 6 a.m.
Kyle said the chance of snow will linger on after the storm.
"We're still going to have significant snow possible," he said.
The high for today is 33 degrees with temperatures dropping to the low 20s overnight. Thursday's high will be in the mid-30s.
Purgatory ski area, which is aiming to open the Friday after Thanksgiving, cheered the early storm.
"Every flake helps," said Beth Holland, spokeswomen for the area.
She said 6 inches had fallen in the plaza by mid-morning and more on the mountain.
