Drivers escape serious injury in U.S. 160 collision

Article Last Updated; Friday, November 06, 2009  12:57AM
A head-on collision closed U.S. Highway 160 for about an hour west of Bayfield, but both drivers escaped life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred about 12:50 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 97, five miles east the Elmore's Corner.

A 2001 Subaru Forester was driving eastbound when the driver, Cassandra Miles, 25, of Durango, drifted across the center line into oncoming traffic.

The vehicle collided with a 2008 Nissan Rogue being driven by Christopher Shellman, 32, of Bayfield.

It was a "spectacular" impact that totaled both cars, but neither driver suffered life-threatening injuries, said Michael Balenti, trooper with the Colorado State Patrol. He attributed the lack of serious injuries to airbags, seat belts and the general design of the cars.

Miles was cited with careless driving causing bodily injury.

Traffic was rerouted on county roads until the wreckage could be removed.
