Three events scheduled in Durango on Friday and Saturday are among 3,000 grass-roots rallies in 160 countries this weekend to call attention to global warming.

International participation in the Day of Climate Action has been promoted by the loosely organized 350.org – a group that takes its name from the recommended maximum of 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The organization, which claims the support of scientists, the governments of 89 countries and environmental and health-care groups, is a clearinghouse and information center.

The current level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 390 ppm.

“350.org just put the idea out there and invited others to follow,” said Claire Ninde, who volunteered to coordinate publicity for the Durango events.

► First off, students will meet at the Fort Lewis College clock tower Friday where, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., they will decorate a 12-by-4-foot banner with 350 figuring prominently. The banner will move Saturday to the Durango Farmers Market, where additions will be made. At either venue, supporters can sign form letters or compose their own about global warming to send to political representatives.

►Focus the Nation, a national nonprofit that promotes clean energy, is sponsoring a forum addressing that topic from 2 to 4 p.m. in the FLC student lounge. Panelists will be Josh Joswick from the San Juan Citizens Alliance, Kim Herb from the Sustainability Alliance of Southwest Colorado, a representative of Diné Care and the Navajo Nation, and representatives of Colorado’s U.S. senators Mark Udall (Wanda Cason) and Michael Bennet (Anna Brown). They will answer questions about climate change during the community dialogue.

► Carrotmob Durango is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Stonehouse Subs sandwich shop, 140 E. 12th St.

Carrotmob is the generic name for an 18-month-old craze that brings as many patrons as possible to a pre-selected business that pledges a percentage of the day’s gross cash receipts to making its building more energy-efficient.
