Speakers at the dedication ceremony for Southwest Colorado Community College gather Aug. 24 to cut the ribbon for the new school. Pictured, from left, are Aryol Brumley, San Juan Basin Technical College founder; Shannon South, West Campus dean; Sherri Wright, member of SCCC advisory committee; Deanne Acott, widow of former SJBTC President Howard Acott; Nancy McCallin, president of Colorado Community College System president; J.D. Garvin, president of Pueblo Community College; and Barbara McKellar, past chairman of the State Board of Colorado Community Colleges.
The improvements came after the merger of San Juan Technical College and Pueblo Community College, effective July 1.
The Mancos campus, located at the old technical college site, is known as Southwest Colorado Community College West.
Local, regional and state dignitaries were on hand for the opening Aug. 24. Among them were Aryol Brumley and Deanne Acott who helped found San Juan Technical College. Shannon South, dean of the new school, recounted the contributions of other administrators.
Southwest Colorado Community College East, in Durango, also has seen improvements, including a 3,350-square-foot expansion that houses bigger science, health and computer labs. The east campus expansion also includes a student services center, an improved video conference room and exterior signage.
The campuses offer two-year associate degrees in arts, science, applied science and general studies. Agreements with four-year institutions of higher education allow credit transfers. Technical and vocational training also are available.
