The Southwest Colorado Community College campus in Mancos started the fall semester with a list of upgrades valued at $1 million. Improvements include information-technology infrastructure, bathrooms remodeled to accommodate people with handicaps, full-service bookstore, an interior and exterior paint job, installation of 165 new computers for classroom and administrative offices and a new learning center and new nursing classroom.

The improvements came after the merger of San Juan Technical College and Pueblo Community College, effective July 1.

The Mancos campus, located at the old technical college site, is known as Southwest Colorado Community College West.

Local, regional and state dignitaries were on hand for the opening Aug. 24. Among them were Aryol Brumley and Deanne Acott who helped found San Juan Technical College. Shannon South, dean of the new school, recounted the contributions of other administrators.

Southwest Colorado Community College East, in Durango, also has seen improvements, including a 3,350-square-foot expansion that houses bigger science, health and computer labs. The east campus expansion also includes a student services center, an improved video conference room and exterior signage.

The campuses offer two-year associate degrees in arts, science, applied science and general studies. Agreements with four-year institutions of higher education allow credit transfers. Technical and vocational training also are available.
