Lifelong Durango resident Joseph Timothy Gurule died of liver failure at Four Corners Health Care Center on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009. He was 38.

Mr. Gurule was born to Lemuel Gurule and Erma Valdez in Durango on Aug. 7, 1971. He attended Durango High School.

He lived in Durango all his life and worked many jobs in the kitchens of numerous restaurants in town.

During his free time, Mr. Gurule enjoyed taking long walks by the Animas River, drawing pictures and jamming to Spanish music. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Mr. Gurule is survived by his mother, Erma Valdez, of Durango; sons Thomas Lucero of Durango and Joseph Gurule House of Towaoc; daughter, Sabryna Lopez, of Durango; sisters Anna Medina, Joyce Valdez, Tina Valdez and Vicky Martinez, all of Durango, and Roberta Sanders of Florence; brothers Stan Valdez and Paul Lujan, both of Durango, and Victor Valdez of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery after the Mass.
