Big, fast and well-coached, Regis most resembled a ranked team Sunday hosting a No. 13 Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team that is battling H1N1.
We looked as if we could be on our game and dangerous, but ... they took over.
The Skyhawks (15-2-2 overall, 11-2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored a goal with three minutes to play to preserve a 2-2 tie despite being outshot 23-7 by the Rangers (12-3-3 overall, 9-2-3 RMAC).
“It was just an absolute battle for us,” said FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “Regis played very, very well. They give us problems. Their kids up top are really good and really athletic.”
FLC was missing Jamie MacArthur, Serena Mancha and Paige Martinez, but managed to staunch the bleeding enough to stay within reach of Regis.
“I’m very proud of these girls in terms of the heart that they’ve shown,” Clarke said. “I thought we did very well to answer some of the questions and the problems we’ve faced this weekend.”
The Skyhawks struck first when Erika Shisler received a pass from Hayley Hollenga near goal and kicked it into the lower left corner for a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute.
“We looked as if we could be on our game and dangerous, but then in all honesty, they took over for a good portion of the game,” Clarke said.
Kari Taylor tied it at 1-all when Jordan Miller’s cross deflected off an FLC defender into her possession for an easy finish and her sixth goal of the season.
The Rangers then took a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute on Taylor White’s deep shot.
“Once we were able to slow things down and play through our midfield in the second half, we began to look like ourselves again,” Clarke said.
Still, FLC didn’t even it up until Hollenga scored on a pass from Michelle Felten in the 87th minute.
Both teams went scoreless in overtime, but Regis applied the most pressure, outshooting the Skyhawks 6-2.
Skyhawks’ keeper Christine Schmelzle recorded six saves in 110 minutes of work.
“(Schmelzle) had done amazing to keep us in the game (until the second goal),” Clarke said.
The teams combined for 33 fouls, with 15 from FLC and 18 from Regis, and Marissa Davis was shown a yellow card in the first overtime period.
FLC has one more game – a home contest against Colorado State University-Pueblo next Sunday – before the RMAC Tournament at Metro State College in Denver starting Nov. 4.
