Fort Lewis College defended its No. 8 national ranking, but women's basketball coach Mark Kellogg was reluctant to describe the season opener as a success.
I thought we'd be a little more structured, but we did some goofy stuff.
"It was a success in the win column," he said Friday from Anaheim, Calif.
FLC, ranked eighth in the Division II preseason poll, defeated San Francisco State 89-74 on Friday in the first of its three-game set at the Disney Tip-Off Classic.
Fort Lewis led 42-26 at the half, then surrendered 48 second-half points.
"It was about as ugly a game as we thought it would be," said Kellogg, who pointed out last year's Skyhawks (28-4) rarely (twice, both losses) allowed 70 points or more.
"We played a little sporadic. I thought we'd be a little more structured, but we did some goofy stuff." Allison Rosel started the season with a double-double - 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Katie Mackey led the Skyhawks with 16 points, while Laura Haugen scored 14 and point guard Abby Jackson 11.
Jackson, a starter for the first time in her collegiate career, distributed five assists but also had eight turnovers.
"She's gotta play a lot better than that," Kellogg said.
Jackson's backup, Katie Mihalco, scored eight points in 12 minutes. Mihalco and Mary Rose Paiz led the FLC reserves with eight points each.
Kellogg also praised the "active" all-around play of reserve Jenna Santistevan.
"We can score. We know we can score points," he said. "We just have to be so much better defensively than what we were. We need to play within our structure.
"We just weren't good enough." Fort Lewis shot 46 percent (26-for-56) from the floor, 44 percent (11-for-25) from the 3-point line and 90 percent (26-for-29) from the free-throw line.
FLC (1-0) will play Western Oregon at 8:30 p.m. today and will finish the tournament with a noon game Sunday against Southern Indiana.
