The No. 3 Fort Lewis College men's soccer team finished a perfect regular season in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Sunday, beating CSU-Pueblo 7-0 on its senior night "It was a good away trip for us," said first-year FLC head coach Oige Kennedy, "to go on the road and get two wins." The Skyhawks (17-1-0 overall, 14-0-0 RMAC) beat UC-Colorado Springs on Friday in freezing temperatures, and thawed out in time to ruin the Thunderwolves' Senior Day.
Six-foot-four sophomore defender Fabian Kling opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a header off a Tom Settle corner kick to the back right of the net, a familiar source of goals for the Skyhawks on Sunday.
"He's someone we'll sorely miss next year," Kennedy said of Settle.
Sophomore Thomas Hoang scored off another Settle service in the 14th minute, then Settle took one himself off a pass from Joe Barnd two minutes later.
Yet another Settle corner gave Kling another header for a goal in Minute 27, then junior Abdel Becerra finished a pass from freshman Cory Dean for a 5-0 halftime lead in the 35th minute.
"He only played 20 minutes," Kennedy said, with a chuckle. "It was a pretty impressive 20 minutes." Senior Jeff Jennings got in on the act and gave Settle his fourth assist of the day in the 58th minute, and sophomore Joe Barnd finished the scoring after a long lapse (in Skyhawks terms) in the 87th minute on an unassisted attempt.
"We used pretty much the full roster," Kennedy said.
It's a good thing for FLC it has options heading into the RMAC Tournament at Dirks Field this weekend.
Kennedy said junior Keane Hamilton - on the sidelines for the FLC women's match Sunday - is finished for the year, while senior RMAC scoring leader Euan Purcell still is recovering from a headache sustained when a Metro State defender stepped on his head.
Kennedy said Purcell tried to warm up last Sunday when his vision became blurred and a headache came on.
"There's other people who've stepped up to fill those roles," Kennedy said, who is hopeful that Fort Lewis will get to host Nationals after a good showing in the RMAC.
