Cross-country cyclist gears up for final miles

Remember cross-country cyclist Noah Leggett of
Durango?
Remember the recent Durango High School graduate who trekked across America on a summer adventure before college?
Remember the single-speed rider who camped and crashed with pals from the East Coast to the Rockies?
Well, he’s pedaling on. And on.
The second and final leg of his “summer” tour started Thursday in Durango.
Leggett and some pals are riding a tandem bicycle from Durango to San Francisco.
Leggett is scheduled to meet up with his father in Northern California, just after Craig Leggett completes an extended work stay in Ethiopia.
Noah and Craig Leggett then plan to ride the tandem down the California coast, adding the final chapter to Noah’s “What I Did On My Summer Vacation” essay for his English 101 class this fall.
“We would like to send a big thanks to Becky and Ben at Backcountry Experience, who so very generously helped Noah secure a top-notch down sleeping bag,” Jess Leggett, Ben’s mom, said this week.
She said the Backcountry Experience folks agreed to help sponsor Noah in exchange for his work in their garden and his work on other projects.
“I was touched by their enthusiasm for Noah’s venture,” Jess Leggett said.

Sarah Tescher, the president of Durango DEVO, is organizing a trail-sharing information session to help young cyclists understand safe trail use.
Tescher has arranged for equestrians and their horses to meet with the young riders Nov. 4 at the Sale Barn trailhead for a program on sharing trails. The riders will learn about safely passing horses and hikers on mixed-use trails. Other trail safety topics will be covered in the session, set for 4 p.m.
The program originally was scheduled for this week, but weather forced a two-week postponement.

Final details have been released for the Fort Lewis College Fall Cyclocross Series, scheduled to open with the FLC NightCross on Nov. 1
at the FLC stadium.
The opening race in the
cyclocross series will start at
5 p.m.
One week later, the series will move to Dolores and Joe Rowell Park for daytime races, starting at 1:30 p.m. The Dolores races are USA Cycling-sanctioned events. Riders will need a USAC license, or they will have to buy a one-day license at the venue.
On Nov. 15, the riders will race at Parque de Vida in Cortez. Then the venue will be Riverside Park in Aztec for races Nov. 21. A day later, Nov. 22, there will be a Durango race at Santa Rita Park. The annual Russell the Musclecross at Buckley Park in downtown Durango will follow Dec. 5. The series finals at the FLC stadium will be Dec. 6.
In connection with the series, Fort Lewis College cycling coach Matt Shriver will stage a cyclocross clinic for anyone interested Nov. 5-7.

Also, weekly cyclocross practice sessions are held at noon near the Fort Lewis softball complex. Plus, there will be a practice race at 10 a.m. Sunday at the FLC softball complex.
