Durango swimmers dominate dual meet
Demons to host Grand Junction today at FLC

The Demons kicked off the new year with a dominating performance in the Fort Lewis College pool Friday afternoon, overpowering Fruita Monument 249-78 in a dual swim meet.
"I honestly don't know what to say," DHS co-head coach Tom Coxwell said. "These girls keep surprising me week after week."
The Demons, reflecting their domination, won all of the swimming events Friday. The only event they didn't win was diving - and the Demons don't have a diver.
"We won every event we swam," Coxwell said.
He said the Demons recorded a state-qualifying time from Melissa Merryman in the 100 backstroke. Merryman is one of two seniors on the DHS roster.
"Melissa broke through the barrier with a state time," Coxwell said. "Now others will follow."
He said Merryman also won the 200 individual medley in Friday's meet.
Megan Curry had a strong meet for the Demons, he said. Carly Merryman, a freshman, had outstanding times, he added.
Megan Deaver and Hanna Mink put up terrific times, Coxwell said. Mink won both the 500 free and 100 free.
Erika Pitcher won the 100 butterfly for the Demons.
Sheyanne Hunsinger won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle for DHS.
Kayla McCarthy won the 100 breaststroke for the Demons.
In many relay events, the DHS swim team swept more than first place.
In the medley relay, the Demon teams finished 1-2-3.
They did the same in the 200 free relay. And DHS was 1-2-4 in the 400 free relay.
"We really had a great crowd (Friday night). There were parents and classmates out to cheer them on," Coxwell said.
"The best thing is the way they lift each other up," he said. The team support and camaraderie is a boost to all the swimmers, he added.
"Everybody is picking it up," Coxwell said. "The two seniors (Melissa Merryman and Johana Fischer) ... set the pace. And this group of 13 freshmen is phenomenal."
The Demons host Grand Junction in another dual swim meet at 10 a.m. today at the Fort Lewis College pool.
